Flowers for Rosh Hashanah

September 1, 2010

The beginning of September, and the end of summer, and back to school… it is truly like the start of a New Year. The Jewish calendar declares that this is the time of new beginnings, a time to kiss the old year good-bye and embrace the new.

A good holiday table features wonderful food. And it should also feature wonderful flowers!

Ontario growers have produced fabulous sunflowers, gerberas, gladiolas and chrysanthemums this year. We are seeing lots of rich red, burgundy, gold and bronze as the fall season begins. Have a look at this arrangement:

Natural Elegance

Or try this autumn centrepiece:

Huron Sunset

There are no gourds available yet, but I love the colours in this centrepiece!

If you prefer, it is quite acceptable to send a bouquet of cut gladiolas for the holidays. They are healthy and long-lasting and come in a variety of colours. You could have them arranged in a vase, if you think that’s what the recipient would like.

Here’s one more photo, featuring a couple of sunflowers:

Sunrise

This is a favourite item from our Martin’s Exclusives collection. The design is organic with groupings of flowers much like they grow in the garden.

Creative Beach Theme Arrangement

25 August 2010

Here is a fun design by Shastyna. She calls it, “All Washed Up.” Looks like someone has been walking on the beach, gathering shells and stones. The arrangement is in a large 12″ tall vase. Mitsumata branches form the upright structure of the design. White lysianthus looks as fresh and delicate as sea spray. Of [...]

Good news about pesticides in water

3 August 2010

A new copy of The Grower arrived in the mail today. I was impressed by an article by Lilian Schaer about the progress Ontario is making in the handling of pesticides. The Grower website is not active, so rather than link to the article, I’ll do some quoting. The Ontario government recently released the results [...]

On June 3rd, we participated in a show at Humberside Collegiate. It was written and directed by Neil Ross of the Junction Historical Society and featured original music by Isaias Garcia. Ten young actors performed, through narration and drama, vignettes from the past.Using cedar boughs, they were young trees growing, native Canadians building longhouses and [...]

You can always get it cheaper…

16 June 2010

When we give wedding quotes, we will do our best to work within the Bride’s budget and still create the look she wants. But sometimes, it’s helpful to demonstrate just what that arrangement or bouquet will look like at the different price levels. The following article illustrates how price can affect the look of the [...]

10 June 2010

“The focuses are relaxed ambience and individuality.” Grania Litwin of the Victoria Times has written an interesting article on current wedding trends. Quoting some notable designers, she touches on colours, themes, locations and decor. If you are planning a wedding or other party in the near future, it’s worth the read. One trend is to [...]

Junction Historic Silos

29 May 2010

Just north of Keele & Dundas, there are old, old silos (similar to  grain elevators) that were built by St. Mary’s Cement in 1912. New condos are being built at the old Canadian Tire site across the tracks, and some silos have been torn down. But some remain, and intrepid photographer Jonathan Castellino of BlogTO [...]
