Time for the holidays! Let’s talk about decorating your home for this festive season.
If you want to keep current with decorating trends, the designers at Martin’s see four major themes this year. The first we call “Red on Red.” It is a layering of reds from cherry to burgundy with an accent of black. It’s a dramatic, intense shot of rich, warm colour. In the shop, we are using “Black Magic” roses for the deep red colour. It is a beautiful rose with a velvet texture and beautiful shape when it opens.
Next we have the classic White. We like the look of only one or two types of white flower, accented with minimal greens and pearl or iridescent beads. Put them in a white ceramic container for a very upscale look. Another nice arrangement is all white flowers in a glass vase with silver filigree accents. So elegant! You can get the look by using white and cream decorations only with fresh pine and cedar in your home.
Brown is a long-neglected colour that has come back into popularity, especially in the chocolate shades. (And who doesn’t like chocolate?) We are featuring brown candles, containers and decorations. One lovely arrangement has brown velvet ribbons and baubles with green cymbidium orchids and Christmas greens in a luscious centrepiece.
Our fourth theme for the holidays is “Lodge.” We describe it as Ralph Lauren meeting Muskoka. It’s a modern country look with traditional red and green colours, and elements from the outdoors. We can’t exactly put a set of antlers in a floral arrangement, but we can get the look with tartan ribbons, mosses and branches. Just a touch of chartreuse keeps the look current. Do any of these themes appeal to you? It’s helpful to pick one and keep it in mind as you’re choosing decorations. Start with what you have on hand, and add something new to make this year’s edition of your holiday home unique. And of course, when you want the piece de resistance, order a centrepiece from Martin’s to decorate the table!
