Before visiting your florist for a bridal consultation, you should have already chosen the attendants’ dresses – the colour of the dresses is a major consideration in choosing the flowers. Usually we will create all the bouquets, church flowers and reception arrangements in co-ordinated colours .This gives the wedding a unified look, a theme.
If you see flowers that appeal to you in a magazine, tear out or mark the pages so that we can begin to see what you like. Keep a Pinterest board of bouquets that appeal to you. But please be ready to entertain other suggestions!
It will pay to research your florist – ask friends about their wedding flowers. See if the florist displays photos of their own work, or testimonials from other brides.
Price is not the most important factor. Quality and reliability are.
Details matter. Bouquets should be neatly finished at the back. A variety of greens will add texture and richness to the arrangements. Corsages and boutonnieres should be labelled.
Flowers are perishable. Your florist will help you choose flowers that they reasonably expect to be able to provide. Should something go wrong, a good florist will substitute flowers that give the same effect as the original ones. If you can keep the bouquets in a cool place when not in use, and spritz them with water occasionally, they should perform well for the entire day.
Choose seasonal flowers. Celebrate the season. Work with nature, bring the outdoors in.
Tulips in spring or sunflowers in late summer – beautiful!
Don’t be afraid to have a budget. Usually a wedding consultation will begin with concepts and favourite flowers. When prices are calculated, you can choose which items are most important to you and discard others. Often, one or two large arrangements can make more impact on a room than a little arrangement on each table.
Sure, it’s only one day. But you will be remembering that day and looking at pictures for years to come. Indulge your love of flowers and make that day beautiful!
