Here’s some helpful information when you receive a bouquet of cut flowers (not already in a vase):
Mix the package of fresh flower food in cold water as directed. Pour it into a clean vase or container.
If the flowers are packaged in blocks of floral foam, water tubes or foam & plastic wrapping, pull the stems out of the packaging. Remove any foliage that will be below the water line.
Now arrange the flowers in your hand as you want them to look in the vase. When you are satisfied, take sharp, clean shears or scissors and cut the stems straight across the bottom (you may also try to make a 45-degree angle cut on each stem, but straight is easier). Try to cut at least one inch (2 or 3 cm) off the bottom of each stem. Then place the flowers immediately into the prepared solution. Adjust the flowers as necessary.
Keep your flowers out of direct sunlight and sources of heat or draft (TV, appliances, radiators, open doors). If you can, put them in a refrigerator or cool room overnight. Check the vase daily and add flower food solution as needed to keep it full. Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses every day!
