It’s the season for crisp apples and bright pumpkins, scenic drives and cosy sweaters. Yes, autumn is here. Which means that Thanksgiving is very soon!
Often, Thanksgiving is the first holiday where students come home from university. I remember spending that first long weekend back home, and thinking what a different person I was from the girl who left home in September.
The best Thanksgivings were when my grandparents would host a family dinner and square dance in the town hall at Newton Robinson. Ladies of the town cooked a traditional feast, including lots of pie for dessert. Long tables of relatives laughed and chatted, and we all ate until we could hardly move. Then we would move upstairs to the main room and learn to square dance together. It was a hoot!
Today it seems we don’t get out into the country as much, but when the leaves change their colours, a drive up Airport Road seems altogether necessary. What a beautiful country we live in!
Our special arrangements for Thanksgiving try to evoke the colours and abundance of harvest time in Ontario. Most of the flowers we use this time of year are grown in Ontario fields and greenhouses – chrysanthemums, kale, sunflowers, dahlias, lilies, gerberas, and even calla lilies. In the spirit of our pioneer ancestors, we celebrate the harvest and give thanks for God’s bounty.
A nice alternative gift for Thanksgiving would be a bouquet of seasonal cut flowers, gift wrapped and delivered. Our designers can choose fresh, bright blooms that look gorgeous together. They are packaged in a block of floral foam so they will stay fresh on delivery, wrapped in cellophane and decorated with ribbon. The lucky recipient can unwrap their flowers and arrange them in their own vase as they wish.
Nothing makes a home look like Thanksgiving more than flowers. (Well, maybe except for a nice roasted turkey.) We hope you’ll find your way home this fall, and count your blessings.
