Our first shipment of poinsettias has arrived. They seem to be nicer every year!
Ontario-grown poinsettias are considered some of the best, and they are shipped all over North America. Our preferred greenhouse is P. Ravensbergen & Sons. Their poinsettias are so popular and such good quality that we have to place our order early in November before they’re all sold out.
There is a myth that continues to circulate, saying that poinsettias are poisonous. This is not true. A child would have to eat 5-600 leaves of poinsettia plants before exceeding the doses that have been determined as non-toxic. Pets may experience stomach upsets, but rarely will have a reaction stronger than that. People with latex allergies should be fine as long as they wipe off any sap that gets on their hands. The Society of American Florists has a blog article on the history of the poinsettia as a Christmas gift. If you have travelled in Mexico, you have probably seen the wild-looking original poinsettias growing. After years of cultivation, we now have a tamer, fuller, longer lasting plant that is suitable for indoors. They are so long-lasting that I sometimes tell friends to throw the darn things out before Valentine’s Day in February!
We like our plants to be well-dressed when they leave the shop. There will be pine boughs inserted in the soil, a nice Christmas ribbon, and the plant will be in a good quality basket. We also offer a spray of glitter over the top, and some dogwood branches. Now that’s a well-dressed plant!
This is our large size poinsettia – it is priced at $54.95, or you could have the glitter and dogwood decoration for $5 more.
Many businesses and professions like to send these plants to their clients to decorate their homes or offices. Because they are so hardy, and such intense bright colours, they dress up a reception area instantly.
Poinsettias will be available at our shop from November 22 to December 24. Most will arrive in the December 1 – 9 range. You can place your order and specify which day you’d like the plant delivered, and we’ll take care of it. But do call soon, before they’re gone!
